Award for Best Independent Company
BalletBoyz - the Talent
BalletBoyz is the brainchild of Michael Nunn and William Trevitt, both former dancers with the Royal Ballet, who founded the company in 2001. Having danced together for almost 25 years, they have recently passed the baton to a new generation of eight young dancers who make up The Talent. A documentary about the formation of The Talent was screened on More4 at Christmas.
Protein Dance
The London-based company was founded in 1997 by the Italian-born choreographer Luca Silvestrini and the Swiss-born Bettina Strickler. Their aim was to take everyday issues and subject them to “a deep, witty analysis” through their “idiosyncratic and distinctive dance theatre”. Protein’s productions, Dear Body and LOL, have been widely acclaimed for their humour and well-observed satire.
Rosemary Butcher Company
Rosemary Butcher has been at the forefront of radical and innovative choreography in the UK for almost three decades. Profoundly influenced by her time in New York in the early 1970s where she encountered the work of the Judson Group at its height, Butcher’s independent dance creation has included collaborations with leading architects, Zaha Hadid and John
Lyall. She is also an inspirational teacher.
Tilted Productions - Maresa von Stockert
Tilted Productions’ work is at the crossover between dance, theatre and performance art. Founded by Maresa von Stockert in
1999, the company now operates from a base in Norfolk and had highly successful tours of Masquerade and Seasaw in 2011.
